Finding the right phone system for your business

If you run a business, this article is for you. The days of hardwired phone systems where you had to be at your desk to take a call or check your voicemail are a thing of the past. With modern business phone systems, you can work from home, control your phone system from your computer -- just about anything you could possibly want to do, without missing a beat.

One of the business phone systems we sell at D&P Communications is called Switchvox. It’s what we use ourselves, and we like to call it “the Ferrari of phone systems.”

With Switchvox, you don’t need to hunt through a manual for codes or navigate interminable phone menus to reprogram your system -- you can do it all right from your computer screen.

Do some of your clients still prefer to send you faxes? With Switchvox, those faxes can be automatically converted into Adobe PDFs for easy reading and storage.

And perhaps best of all, Switchvox makes working remotely a breeze. A few years ago, when a massive snowstorm hit southeast Michigan, most of our employees couldn’t safely make it into work. But our customers still needed us. Because of our state-of-the-art phone system, all of our employees were able to fire up their laptops and their cell phones and work from home. Our office was completely empty, but you would never have known it. Our phone system allowed the entire company to run like normal, even though nobody was physically there.

This kind of system isn’t necessarily for everyone. If you run a small business that only needs a few lines, installing something like Switchvox would be overkill -- like using an elephant gun for squirrel-hunting. But if you have at least four or five users, or if you want a lot of flexibility, give us a call at 800-311-7340 and ask how we can help your business run more smoothly -- no matter where you are!

Equipment Matters When Surfing Category: Blog

What kind of modem should I get? Make sure you’re getting the most out of your internet

There’s nothing more frustrating than signing up for high-speed internet and then finding out you’re stuck at your old speeds because your equipment isn’t up to the task.

But unless you’re a technician, all modems pretty much look the same. So how can you tell if you have the right modem for your connection speed?

If you have an older modem, it might be operating on a standard called DOCSIS 2.0 or even DOCSIS 1.1. DOCSIS, in case you’re interested, stands for Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification -- but that’s not really important. The main thing you need to know is that if your modem isn’t operating on at least DOCSIS 3.0, no matter how lightning-quick your connection is, you’ll never get downloads faster than 25 Mbps.

Nobody wants to pay for a 50 Mbps or 110 Mbps connection and not make the most of it. So here are a few simple ways you can check to see if your modem can give you what you need.

  • Check the manual. Somewhere in your owner’s manual, or even on the box the modem came in, you should be able to find out whether it’s a DOCSIS 3.0 modem or something older.
  • If you don’t still have the box or the manual, just find your modem’s serial number -- it should be written somewhere on the unit -- and plug that number into Google. You should be able to find the answer pretty quickly.

If you have a wireless network in your home, it’s also a good idea to check your router. Some older wireless routers broadcast on a frequency of 2.4 GHz, and if that’s the case for you, your wireless speed will top out around 25 Mbps. To find out if your wireless router is limiting your speed, go to speedtest.net and hit the “Begin Test” button -- then plug your computer directly into your modem and do it again. If your speeds are a lot faster when you’re plugged in directly, you may want to upgrade your router.

At D&P Communications, the modem we recommend is made by Arris, and it’ll run you $96.50. We recommend purchasing directly from us. You’ll always get the best results when your modem and your ISP’s network are configured the same way -- that’s why most ISPs make you lease a modem from them.

When you compare the $96.50 purchase price of a high-speed Arris modem running the latest standard to the cost of renting a modem from any other ISP, we think you’ll find that D&P saves you money in the long run. And it’s worth it to make sure you’re getting the high-speed service you deserve!

Watch TV Everywhere Category: Blog

Watch TV on your computer, tablet or phone with D&P Communications

Do any of these situations sound familiar? You want to watch a movie, but the kids would rather turn on Spongebob -- and there’s only one TV. Or you’re on the road, but you really want to catch the game.

As a D&P Communications subscriber, you have access to a service called TV Everywhere. With TV everywhere, you can watch your favorite cable channels wherever you are -- whether it’s on your laptop at the kitchen table, on your tablet while traveling out of town, or even on your smartphone while you’re waiting for your number to be called at the Secretary of State.

Here’s how it works: Just go to WatchTVEverywhere.com and choose D&P Communications from the dropdown menu at the top of the page. Use your D&P email and account number to create a login, then just click on the channel you want to watch.

Here are a few more things you should know about WatchTVEverywhere:

  • It includes live TV. Most streaming video services only offer previously recorded shows. But depending on the channel, WatchTVEverywhere also offers the ability to watch exactly what you’d see on your TV set. The live feed of CNN is available. So is live game coverage from the NFL Network or ESPN, as long as you subscribe to those channels as part of your cable package.
  • For those networks that don’t have live feeds, it often has new episodes of your favorite TV shows within days -- no waiting for the entire season to be released on Netflix or DVD.
  • Finally, it’s free! WatchTVEverywhere is an additional service we make available to D&P subscribers, at no additional cost.

Click here if you’d like to learn more about WatchTVEverywhere -- or here if you want to jump in right away! And if you’re not a D&P subscriber yet, just give us a call at 800-311-7340 and find out what we can do for you.
